This week we went on an exciting book walk, reading the story of Hansel and Gretel. We collected treasure on the way round to help us remember the story. The year 2 children were responsible for reading the story and keeping the Year 1 children safe. We had lots of fun!

In Year One we had a visit from the RSPB to look at different homes for nature around our school. Across Year One, the children have been working really hard at home to create some fantastic pieces of homework for our topic of Africa! In Year One we had a phone call from the WWF telling us about some elephants in Uganda, Africa which have been captured. We decided to become an Elephant Rescue Team and plan a visit to Africa to help save the day! I wonder what we will need to take on our long journey.. .

In year 1 we have been looking at pictures of African art from Tanzania, specifically known as ‘Tinga Tinga’. These inspired us to create our own pieces of art which we are very proud of!

All children made a huge effort to raise money for cancer research in a mini ‘Race For Life’. Thank you for all of the donations and for the fantastic effort with running – we have some athletes in the making!
Lily from Otter class has bought in her giant African land snails for us to look at as part of our Africa topic. We have been feeding and spraying them and enjoyed learning about their special features and diet.

In Tuesdays assembly, we had a special guest Reverend Mark Elvin. He told us about the Queen and taught us the ‘National Anthem’ ready for tomorrow. Today, we sang the ‘National Anthem’ in class. At lunchtime the chefs had prepared wonderful cakes and a tribute for the Queen’s birthday with her photo and banners. . […]
In Year 1 we have been focusing on the text of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ to help us learn more about Africa and African culture. We all tasted, smelt and felt the fruits from the story and voted on our favourite – we all loved the juicy mango the most!
